Condensation of (3-methoxyphenyl)urea or guanidine derivatives (la-e) with a variety of acyl chlorides in polyphosphoric acid leads to intramolecular cyclization with formation of the title compounds (2a-j). Attempted one pot preparation of new tricyclic pyrrolo [3,2,1-ij]-2(2H)-quinazolinone derivatives (3) using (1f) carboxamidoindoline (1f) and acyl chlorides were carried out.
